To address the city of Santa Monica’s affordable housing shortage, as well as the city’s commitment to sustainable development, the nonprofit Community Corporation of Santa Monica (CCSM) constructed Colorado Court. A five-story apartment complex consisting of 44 studios, Colorado Court reserves all of its units for those earning between 35 and 40 percent of the area median income. The 204 two-by-five-foot (0.61-by-1.52-meter) solar panels covering the front and top of this apartment complex are among the more visible “green” building features that went into its design and construction.
