The nine-acre (3.6-hectare) Discovery Collection at Riverdale consists of “Pull-a-Part” Townhomes, whose design is based on a concept by BSB Design that allows single-family homebuilders to build at higher densities than normally possible for single-family houses. When completed, the 175 townhomes will be set within the larger 57.9-acre (23.4-hectare) master-planned community of Riverdale, which is located five miles (eight kilometers) west of downtown Sacramento, California. The name “Pull-a-Part” comes from the idea that the project’s units are townhouses that have been detached from each other. Because the design has proven to be less costly to build than traditional single-family residences, the developers were able to pass the savings on to the customers and thereby sustain sales in a real estate market that had plateaued.
