North Town Village is a seven-acre (2.8-hectare), 261-unit mixed-income residential development located two miles (3.2 kilometers) north of downtown Chicago. The buildings, which include owner-occupied and rental units, consist of townhouses, duplexes, coach houses, and four-, six-, and eight-unit structures. Developed jointly by the Holsten Real Estate Development Corporation and the Kenard Corporation, the $75 million project is the first development in the transformation of the Cabrini-Green Homes—a public housing complex built between 1942 and 1962 that gained negative national attention for its high concentrations of crime and poverty. The failure of Cabrini-Green was one of the many influences responsible for the changes in how public officials conceptualize and design affordable and workforce housing projects. Embodying many of the lessons learned from its predecessor, North Town Village comprises 50 percent market-rate units, 20 percent affordable units, and 30 percent public housing reserved for former residents of Cabrini-Green.
