Shambhala is a newly renovated, 0.36-acre (0.145-hectare) building consisting of 60 studio apartments near downtown Denver, Colorado. Developed by Portus Funds, a private, locally based real estate investment firm, it is one of eight “boutique” and art-themed rental projects in its portfolio. Geared specifically toward young professionals, this 1950s-era structure was named after a mythical kingdom in Buddhist culture that also serves as the project’s design theme. Symbols, colors, and art–including statues of Buddha–are intended to reflect Buddhist and Hindu aesthetic traditions. In addition, the project contains many “green” building features. Each apartment comes with energy-efficient appliances and windows and recycled carpet, and the project employs a water conservation system and a recycling program.
