Canal Street Apartments

Canal Street Apartments is a 133-unit single-room occupancy building in Houston, Texas’s historic East End neighborhood. Apartments are reserved for tenants who earn up to $27,820, which is 65 percent of the area median income (AMI) of $42,812.50. However, 120 of the units are set aside for those who earn less than half of the AMI. As of spring 2009, the building is 96 to 98 percent occupied and units rent for less than $400 per month. By using clean lines and a modern aesthetic, project developer New Hope Housing Inc., sought to give Canal the appearance of a market-rate building. The apartments have had a catalytic effect on the neighborhood with nearby properties undergoing new development, such as a new market-rate loft housing development and a new restaurant.
