Ed Roberts Campus
Named for a prominent Bay Area disability activist, the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley, California, is a highly accessible office building that is the satisfying product of a long and laborious effort by local activists and nonprofits. Conceived by a consortium of like-minded partners committed to serving people with disabilities, the facility has become an international center for the Independent Living Movement and a community center that improves links to public transportation and celebrates diversity. The 1.6-acre (0.65-ha), 65,000 square-foot (6,039-m2) facility was constructed using universal design principles and provides mutually supportive office space, a child care center, and direct access to a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station.
